About The Institute

Join us for 3 days of intensive training and fun-filled learning.       GATEWAY TO MASTERY integrates the Quality Management philosophy  of Continuous Improvement with the latest brain and assessment research, cognitive theory, child psychology and systems thinking to improve every aspect of the school and classroom. The Summer Institute offers five days of training, Indiana State University will offer graduate level credits and CRU's will be available through Indiana NCA. The workshop is facilitated by Jeff and Jacquie Burgard who successfully developed and pioneered Continuous Improvement techniques for the school and classroom.

Participants will gain knowledge and experience in all Three Disciplines of

GATEWAY TO MASTERY: Culture, Knowledge and Performance Mastery The Burgards will combine modeling, practice, lecture, discussions, group work and activities into the schedule which includes opportunities to learn theory and practice, experience the student’s perspective, practice the teacher’s role and receive the necessary preparation time to implement the philosophy at the start of the next school year. Space is limited to 35 participants to ensure plenty of one on one coaching.

Participants Will Be Able To:

  • Apply systems thinking to their unique situation for better communication and alignment

  • Learn a framework to continuously improve learning and culture

  • Understand how to manage people and systems instead of behavior

  • Apply effective, unobtrusive, school-wide, classroom and individual data collection techniques to enable continuous adjustments - without being a statistician

  • Implement on-going staff and/or student engagement through sharing data, discussing challenges, testing theories and      planning improvement

  • Acquire and utilize feedback to improve the school/           classroom system

  • Tap into intrinsic motivation for improved enthusiasm

  • Learn how to have high achievement and high standards

  • Create a standards based, continuously improving learning system

  • Understand how to effectively utilize both formative and   summative assessments

  • Learn how to overcome the “Teach, Test and Forget” paradigm   and build classroom teamwork

  • Enable staff and/or students to become partners in their            own improvement

  • Understand how to utilize both rubric and non-rubric performance assessments in the classroom

  • Develop authentic assessments of student performance

  • Develop objective, easy to understand rubrics and evaluation techniques to distinguish between understanding and presentation

  • Show students how focus their learning through better self-assessment and analysis of their own learning data 

  • Capitalize on progress data to become teachers who are more responsive to learning 

  • Assess efficacy of improvement interventions in the school/classroom culture and learning

 

Tools to Take Home

Participants will have access to web-based GATEWAY TO MASTERY  Tool-Kits which provide all the tools necessary to implement the techniques they learn. They will also receive four wall size graphs to monitor class progress.

Jeffrey J. Burgard

Co-owner & Educational Consultant, J.J. Burgard & Associates, Inc.; Bachelor of Arts, California State University, Sacramento. Eleven years experience as a middle school teacher; author of Continuous Improvement in the Science Classroom: conducted workshops for educators throughout the United States and Australia: presented at conferences/schools in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Nepal.

 

 

Jacqueline K. Burgard

Co-owner & Educational Consultant, J.J. Burgard & Associates, Inc.; Bachelor of Science, Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. Sixteen years experience with Quality Management principles in business; worked in kindergarten and junior high classrooms: conducted workshops for educators throughout the United States and Australia.
